MOYAMOYA DISEASE

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular disorder characterized by the progressive narrowing of certain arteries in the brain. As a result, the blood flow to the brain is restricted, leading to the development of tiny collateral blood vessels to compensate for the reduced blood supply. The term “Moyamoya” means “puff of smoke” in Japanese, which describes the appearance of these collateral vessels on angiograms.

Moyamoya disease primarily affects children and young adults, although it can occur in people of all ages. Its exact cause is not fully understood, and there may be a genetic component in some cases. Patients with Moyamoya disease are at risk of experiencing transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or strokes, which can result in various neurological symptoms, such as weakness, paralysis, seizures, and cognitive problems.

Treatment for Moyamoya disease aims to improve blood flow to the brain and prevent further complications. Surgical revascularization procedures, such as direct and indirect bypass surgeries, are often performed to restore blood flow. Additionally, medications may be prescribed to manage risk factors and prevent clot formation.

It is crucial for individuals suspected of having Moyamoya disease to receive prompt medical evaluation and treatment to minimize the risk of long-term neurological damage. As with any medical condition, individuals should consult with a qualified healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
